Live awards shows are always full of snags and surprises, but as the stars converged on the red carpet tonight with their coteries of family members and handlers, there were some moments that stood out as especially awkward.
Miley Cyrus, slouching a bit in a gold gown, said she was nervous about negotiating the slick stairs onstage and recalled that her dad kept stepping on her train the previous year. Not to worry this year though: With dad at home babysitting, Cyrus brought her mom, Tish, who eventually popped on-screen and spun around to reveal a sizable back tattoo featuring two angel wings. "She has excellent taste in tattoos," said Cyrus, who herself wanted to be more "Marilyn-esque" for the night. Before moving down the carpet Miley's mom gave E! host Ryan Seacrest a kiss on the cheek. "Her mom's like out of control!" E!'s Giuliana Rancic later crowed.
Earlier in the evening Vera Farmiga, nominated for best supporting actress for "Up in the Air," put her foot in her mouth big time when asked who had her vote for best director. "Kathryn [Bigelow]'s got my vote. Kathryn's got my vote," she enthused, before seemingly realizing she'd snubbed the director of the movie she was nominated for. "With all due respect to Jason Reitman," she added, putting her head in her hand and looking visibly shaken. "I just misstepped," she said, shaking her head.
George Clooney, meanwhile, seemingly left his own girlfriend in the lurch to crack wise on the carpet with Queen Latifah and Oscars co-producer Adam Shankman. While the actors joked with Seacrest, Clooney's paramour Elisabetta Canalis stood there awkwardly, making no attempt to hide her listlessness.
But perhaps the most unnerving moment of the preshow came when Meryl Streep busted him for having been too effusive with Sandra Bullock, also a contender for best actress. "You were cheerleading a little, but that's all right," Streep scolded. When asked how many nominations it's been since her last win in '82, she said "107."
