http://forum.hawaaworld.com/files/25365/smoking1.jpg
http://forum.hawaaworld.com/files/25365/smoking2.jpg
http://forum.hawaaworld.com/files/25365/smoking3.jpg
http://www.smockingstore.com/small/16ajpltra.jpg

http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/tight.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Pull too tight and your work will pull in and will loose elasticity. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/loose.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Too loose and the stitches won't touch each other and the thread will look loose and untidy.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg1. Tie a single knot in the thread and bring needle up through the left hand valley of the second pleat, a needle's width above the second gathering row. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image6.gif (If you take your needle through the point of a pleat at the back, it will come up through the valley at the front.) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg2. Insert needle back through the first pleat (from left to right) keeping needle parallel to the gathering thread and you are ready to start stitching. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image12.gif
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image13.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg When your thread runs out in middle of a row, finish off to the right hand side of the pleat ( just as if you ere going to go on stitching) and then begin the new thread to the left hand side of the same pleat. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image16.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Take your threaded needle through the valley of the next pleat to the back of your work. Turn your work over so that your stitches now lay to the right hand side and take a backstitch into the top of the next pleat (to the right), Pull this firmly but not enough to distort the pleats. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image14.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Take another stitch in that same pleat and pull gently this time, leaving a little loop. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/image15.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Pass the needle through this loop and pull the thread. The knot will slide down onto the pleat, Cut thread leaving a quarter inch tail.

Cable Stitch and Variations
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Start by bringing the needle up to the left of the first pleat. With thread under needle, pick up the second pleat, inserting the needle from right to left. This is called an under cable. Give a gentle tug upward as you finish the stitch. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cablea.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. The third pleat is picked up in the same manner but with the thread above the needle. (An over cable.) Gently pull the thread down as you finish the stitch.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cableb.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Continue across the row in this manner with the thread alternating above below and above the needle. Use your needle to push stray stitches into alignment. Remember to always keep your needle parallel to the gathering row as you sew and you cable stitch will sit straight. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cablec.gif

Straight Stitches
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/stem.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Begin as per instructions for starting a row of stitches (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/smkstch2.html#starting). Stem stitch is made with the needle passing horizontally through the pleat and with the thread always under the needle. Give a gentle upward tug as you finish each stitch. Work slowly. Keep your tension constant and use the tip of your needle to straighten up as you go along. Remember to keep the "bite" of your stitches consistent...
Outline Stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Begin as before. Outline stitch is made with the needle passing horizontally through pleat and with the thread always over the needle. Gently tug the thread downward as each stitch is finished. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/out1.gif
Wheat Stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/wheat.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Stitch a row of outline stitch.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. Directly below this stitch a row of stem stitch.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Work slowly and carefully, straightening up your stitches as you go with the tip of your needle. No fabric should show between the two rows.

Baby Wave Diamonds
These are very loose stitches and are made by making a mirror image of your first row of Baby Wave Stitches.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Stitch the first row of one step baby wave stitches half way down from the first gathering row, beginning with an under cable. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Directly below this first row and beginning with a top level cable stitch, sew a second row of one step baby wave stitches.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/halfspd.gif This is how the diamonds are formed. The cable stitches should touch each other but should not overlap. Each completed diamond will have two pleats in its center.

2. With thread under needle make a one step baby wave (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/zz1.html#osbw)stitch up to half way between gathering rows. 3. Thread over needle make an over cable (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/cable.html#cable) stitch.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cabwav2.gif 4. Make four more cable stitches level with the first and ending with an over cable (so that there are five cable stitches in total in this block). Thread should be over needle at this stage.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 5. Now stitch a one step baby wave down to the lower gathering row.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cabwav3.gif 6. Thread under needle make an under cable stitch. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cabwav4.gif 7. Continue from step 2. across the row.
Three Cable---Wave---Three Cable Combination
1. Starting with an under cable, stitch three cables (under/ over/ under)
2. Work a one step baby wave up to the half way mark between gathering rows.
3. Stitch three cables (over/ under/ over)and then,
4. Make a one step baby wave down to the bottom gathering row.
Repeat steps 1 to 4 across the row.

Cable---Trellis Combinations
Three Cable---Two Step Trellis---Three Cable Combination
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cabtrel.gif 1. Stitch three cable stitches beginning with an under cable (under-over-under)
2. Make a two step trellis (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/trellis.html#2st) up to half way between gathering rows
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Stitch three cable stitches beginning with an over cable (over-under-over)
4. Make a two step trellis back down to the starting row
Continue across row in this manner
Hearts
Small Hearts
1. The first row is a row of one step baby waves (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/zz1.html#osbw) beginning with an under cable
2.The second row is a row of three step trellis (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/trellis.html#3st)beginning with an over cable.
Notice that all of the under cables of the first row correspond with the top cables of the row of trellis stitches. You will have two baby waves creating the tops of your hearts and one trellis making up the bottoms.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/sheart.gif
Large Hearts
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/lheart.gif The first row is a row of two step trellis (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/trellis.html#2st) beginning with an under cable.
The second row is a row of five step trellis (anchoring bottom and top level cable stitches with five steps in between) beginning with an over cable.
You will have two sets of two step trellis creating the tops of your hearts and one set of five step trellis making up their bottoms... and note that these hearts take up one and a half rows.
Combinations of Hearts and Diamonds
The first row is two step trellis (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/trellis.html#2st) starting with an under cable.
The second row is a combination made up of (five step trellis---two step trellis---five step trellis).
Be careful with your count. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/hd.gif
Crossover Stitches
The term crossover refers to the pattern made when one row of smocking is stitched over another (i.e. crossed over). These stitches are very effective when two different colours are used. You can then thread ribbons through the resultant thread loops for an extra special effect.
Full Space Wave---three Cable Crossover
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cros1.gif 1. Beginning with an under cable, work three cable stitches. (under-over-under)
2. Now work a full space one step wave (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/zz1.html#osw)up to the top gathering row.
3. Work three cable stitches.(over-under-over)
4. Make a one step wave down to the bottom gathering row.
5. Work three cables beginning with an under cable and continue across the row.
6. Change colour of thread
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cros2.gif Begin this second row of stitching on the top gathering row directly above your first set of cable stitches.
Note: the stitches will be opposite your first row and will fill in the gaps left from the first row.
These stitches should look like a continuation of, rather than an addition to, your first row, so take care that these stitches lay level with the first stitching row.
7. Work three cables beginning with an over cable(over/ under/ over) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/cros3.gif 8. Make a one step wave down to the first gathering row and then work three cables (under/ over/ under)
Continue across the row in this manner.
Half Space Wave---Five Cable Combination
As above but this is stitched over the half space instead of full. Makes a more delicate stitch.
Combination Half Space and Full Space Crossover
Use two different shades of one colour or two different colours for this one. I used the lighter shade for the first row (the background colour)in my sample.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Work a row of full space one step waves (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/zz1.html#osw), beginning with an under cable.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. With a second colour thread begin next row half way between the gathering rows. (This will be your top row.)
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Work a row of one step baby waves (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/zz1.html#osw), beginning with an over cable and stitched directly above the first cable of the first row. (Be careful not to catch the thread of the first row as you stitch the second.) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/hsfscros.gif

Honeycomb Stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/honey.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Working from left to right and beginning on the bottom gathering thread, (row 2) start by inserting the needle right to left in the first pleat to secure the knot. Pick up the first two pleats together with an under cable. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step1.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. Take another stitch on the same two pleats (inserting your needle through the the same exit point as your first stitch), but leave the needle in the back of your work this time, pointing up to the top gathering row. Don't rush it. It is slow going but the extra care now will show in the finished work. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step2.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Bring needle back to the surface through the valley between the first and second pleats level with the top gathering thread (row 1) and pull thread through. With thread over needle pick up the second and third pleats together. Keep needle the horizontal. (The dotted line in these diagrams represent the thread under the fabric) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step3.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 4. Make an over cable over these same two pleats with the thread over the needle and leave the needle in the back pointing down to the bottom gathering row (inserting your needle through the the same exit point as your first stitch). http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step4.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 5. Bring the needle to the front through the valley of the previous pleats you stitched together on the bottom gathering row, level with the bottom gathering row. Notice that the rule here is to always pick up the last pleat you have just stitched and the next new pleat as you move across the row stitching the pleats together in twos. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step5.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 6. Back stitch these pleats with an under cable and continue across the row in this manner. Keep checking all pleats have been stitched and only two at a time. I assure you that it frustrating to find that you've missed the count later on. So go slowly and keep checking now.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 7. Start the next row of stitching, as before, with an undercable level with gathering row 4. The back of your finished work should have bands of stitching with an unstitched row in between. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/step6.gif
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/shoney.jpg Surface Honeycomb
You'll find surface honeycomb stitch is a much easier stitch to execute than honeycomb. It, too, is highly elastic and has a very textured quality because the thread lies on the surface of the fabric this time. A new pleat is picked up with each top or bottom cable.Work from left to right.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Begin the row by inserting the needle right to left into the first pleat (to secure the knot). Pick up the second pleat with an under cable stitch level with the bottom gathering row.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. Keeping the thread under the needle, pick up this second pleat again, while keeping level with the top gathering thread. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/sh1.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Change the thread position to over the needle and pick up the next pleat to complete a top level cable stitch http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/sh2.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 4.Thread still over the needle, move back down to the bottom gathering row and pick up this third pleat again.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 5. Thread under needle, stitch a bottom level cable. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/sh3.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 6. Continue across the row in this manner. The second row is worked directly under the first one, from left to right, beginning with an over cable and going down to the bottom gathering row, etc and so forming the bottoms of the diamonds. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/sh4.gif

Single Van Dyke stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd8.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Bring the needle up between the first two pleats to be stitched on the right hand side of the fabric. Take the thread through to the left hand side of the second pleat. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd1.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. Keeping thread over needle take a backstitch through pleats one and two. (I have found that angling the needle ever so slightly as you do this second stitch will make it easier to keep the stitch straight and even in depth. Also, take care not to pierce the threads of the first stitch (otherwise... and not that you will need to, *smile* , unpicking in the event of a mistake, will be a nightmare!) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd2.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Thread still over needle, follow pleat two down to the bottom gathering row and take a stitch through pleats two and three (an old pleat and a new one) http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd3.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 4. Thread under needle, make a backstitch through these two pleats again. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd4.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 5. Thread still under needle, travel up on pleat three and make a stitch through pleats three and four (old pleat and a new pleat) . http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd5.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 6. Changing thread to over needle, backstitch through pleats three and four a second time. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd6.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 7. Continue across row in this manner.
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/vd7.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Example of multiple rows of single Van Dyke Stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg Hint:--- A single row of van dyke stitch worked over a full space between two rows of cable stitches makes an effective casing for 1/8 inch ribbon for sleeves.
Multiple Row Van Dyke Stitch
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 1. Begin as before (http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/vandyke.html?200828#svd), and bring the needle up between the first two pleats to be stitched on the right hand side of the fabric.Take the thread through to the left side of the second pleat (as if taking a stitch) and keeping thread over needle take a backstitch through pleats one and two. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 2. Follow second pleat down to the half space mark between gathering rows and take a stitch through pleats two and three. Changing thread to over needle position, secure these pleats with a backstitch. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/dvd1.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 3. Still with thread over needle, travel down the third pleat to the bottom gathering row and stitch through pleats three and four. Restitch with a backstitch. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/dvd3.gif http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/up/cadot.jpg 4. Continue working down in this manner until the bottom of the wave is reached and then changing thread to the under needle position, work back up, a half space at a time in the same manner. http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/images/dvd4.gif
